There’s something I love about photographing families in their own home. The kids are at ease, the parents stop performing, and what comes out is much closer to who they actually are together. Which is the whole point, really.

This session with MaryJane and her family is a lovely example. Four of them, one beautiful South London home, an easy afternoon of being themselves while I quietly photographed them.

We started in the bedroom, which is where I usually like to begin. There’s something about a family on a bed together… the closeness of it, the way kids climb over their parents without thinking, the unguarded affection. It sets the tone for the rest of the session.

What I love about MaryJane’s family is how playful they are together. You can see it in every frame. The shoulder-rides, the giggling, the easy physicality between them. As a Greenwich baby photographer, this is what I’m always looking for. Not posed togetherness but real togetherness.

Home sessions work best when you treat your house as part of the story rather than something to tidy away. The morning light through your kitchen window, the corner of the sofa where everyone piles on, the bedroom that holds all those small daily moments… these are the details that make a photograph feel like yours, not someone else’s.
