A Hampstead Heath family photoshoot

This one began at home, on a big soft bed in NW3. Kate and her family were still in slow morning mode, warm and a little sleepy. So we started gently, with cuddles and giggles rather than group shots. That easy pace set the tone for the whole day. Kate had booked a session that could hold both worlds, indoors and out. Her two boys, aged three and one, were never going to pose on command. So we simply planned the day around them.

Starting the day at home in Hampstead

The first hour stayed indoors. Mum and her eldest son rolled around on the bed together. They laughed at nothing and everything, which is exactly what I hope for. Then Dad climbed up with the baby. Soon all four were piled in a heap, mid tickle and fully themselves. Because the children felt at home, they forgot about me quickly. And that is when the honest expressions arrive.

Later, everyone settled on the floor with a picture book. The room went quiet for a moment. Both boys leaned in, and the story pulled them right in. These small, ordinary scenes matter more than people expect. Years from now, the bedtime books and the tangle of limbs are the parts they will miss. So I always leave room for them.

Quiet moments between mother and baby

Every session has softer beats too. While the boys took a break, Kate sat with her youngest by the window. She lifted him high, and he gazed down at her with total trust. Light spilled across the room and softened everything around them. In fact, these are often the frames parents love most later on. They feel like home when you look back in ten years. Kate barely noticed the camera here, and that shows in her face.

After the calm indoors, we headed outside. The Heath sat just minutes away, green and glowing in the summer evening. Both boys ran ahead through long grass, and nobody told them to slow down. Instead, we followed and let the walk become the shoot. Kate lifted the baby again, this time against a wall of leaves. Meanwhile Dad swung the eldest up onto his back.

A good Hampstead Heath family photoshoot moves at the family’s speed, not mine. So we wandered, paused, and caught each moment as it came. The evening light did the rest. Because we kept walking, the children stayed happy and busy the whole time. For the final few frames, the family drifted into a patch of tall grass. Everyone was laughing by then, slightly windswept and easy. That is usually the moment I get my favourite shot of the day.

What to wear for a session like this

Clothes matter less than most people think. Still, a few simple choices help the photos feel calm. This family wore soft neutrals and navy, which sat beautifully against the green. Generally, I suggest gentle tones over big logos and busy patterns. Comfort helps too, especially with young children who need to move. Above all, wear what actually feels like you. One more tip, pack a snack for little ones. It buys everyone a few extra minutes of calm.

Book your Hampstead Heath family photoshoot

Sessions like Kate’s suit families with young children who rarely sit still. That is the whole point, though. I photograph the real thing, never a pose held for the count of three. If you would like something similar, take a look at my family photography sessions in London. Then get in touch, and we can plan a morning or evening that fits your family. I would love to hear your story and spend a little time inside it.
