Highgate Family Photoshoot for a First Birthday at Home and in the Woods
This Highgate family photoshoot began with birthday bunting, a kitchen sink and a baby with places to be. His parents had warned me in advance. He loves to move, and he does not like being still. So I took that as a brief rather than a warning.
A first birthday at home in Highgate
We started in the flat, because home is where a one year old is most himself. Across the bay window, a string of letters spelled out the big news. Morning light poured in through tall sash windows. Meanwhile, the birthday boy was busy squealing at the letter B.
Then came the sink. Of course, every parent knows the pull of a running tap. He sat on the edge and splashed with total focus, while Dad kissed the top of his head. Those are my favourite kind of frames, because nobody is thinking about the camera.
Letting a busy toddler lead the way
After the kitchen, we drifted down the hallway into the living room. There was a teepee, a big sofa and a lot of cushions. Everyone ended up in one warm heap, laughing. I just kept shooting.
A little later he found a doorway to peek around. Instead of chasing him, I waited by the play corner until he popped out again. Patience is half of this job. The other half is knowing when to lie on the floor.
Mum lifted him high by the window, and he flew. Dad settled down with a book beside the teepee. Later, there was a quieter moment with Mum in the armchair. That mix of noisy and calm is what a home session gives you.
A Highgate family photoshoot in the woods
Next, we headed outside. Dad carried him down the front steps in his little striped romper. Mum pushed the buggy while a rocket balloon bobbed along behind her. Traffic lights, passers by and a giant foil rocket made for a very Highgate parade.
Highgate Wood was our green space for the second half. The paths are wide and soft, and the trees give shade on warm days. For crawlers and new walkers, that matters more than a pretty view.
He planted himself on the path next to his balloon and got straight to work. Sticks were collected, studied and offered to Mum. In fact, the stick phase lasted longer than the balloon phase. Nobody minded at all. Balloons in woodland need a little care, by the way. Low branches love a stray ribbon. Ours stayed tied to a small weight, and the rocket behaved beautifully.
Why a home and park session works so well
Above all, this family wanted real birthday moments alongside some calmer pictures. They asked for portraits of him on his own, the three of them together, and time with just Mum. The flat and the woods covered all of that without a single outfit change.
For me, a first birthday is a lovely point to pause. Babies change so fast in that first year. Still, the pictures that matter most are often the small ones, like tiny hands holding a muddy stick.

Tips for a birthday shoot in North London
Start at home in the morning, when little ones are fresh and the light is soft. Then save the park or woods for after a snack. Bring the balloons, but tie them to something heavy. Also, pack a spare top, because sticks and mud are part of the deal.
Ready for your own Highgate family photoshoot?
If you are planning a birthday or family session in Highgate, I would love to hear from you. Send me a message with your dates and a little about your children. Together we can plan something you will want on your walls for years.
Morning often suits babies and toddlers best, because they are rested and fed. Soft light through the windows also makes home pictures glow. Later afternoon can be lovely in the woods too. We can pick a time around naps.
Starting at home helps little ones settle in with their own toys and faces. After that, a walk outside feels like an adventure. Many families enjoy both in one session. Still, a park on its own works well too.
Both are lovely, and they feel quite different. Highgate Wood has shady paths and tall trees, which suit busy crawlers. Waterlow Park has open lawns, ponds and views over the city. I am happy to talk it through with you.
Soft, simple clothes in gentle colours work beautifully. A romper or dungarees let them crawl and squat in comfort. Bare feet look sweet indoors. For the woods, bring a spare outfit in case of mud.
Not at all, because I follow their lead. Busy children often give the most joyful pictures. I will move with them rather than ask them to stop. Snacks and a favourite toy help too.
A home session works beautifully on a grey day, so rain is rarely a disaster. We can talk through a wet weather plan when we book. Soft window light indoors is very forgiving.
