A Misty Morning Tower Bridge Family Photoshoot

When London shows up like this, you stop and take it in
Some mornings at Tower Bridge look exactly like the postcards. Most don’t. This one did.
We met just after sunrise, when the river was still and the fog hadn’t quite lifted off the water. The bridge looked almost soft in it. There was barely anyone around, which is unusual for one of the most photographed spots in London, and it gave the whole session a quiet, dreamlike feel that I couldn’t have planned for if I’d tried.
This is the case I always make for getting up early when you’re visiting London. The streets belong to you. The light is gentle and flattering rather than harsh. And every so often, the weather does something genuinely beautiful, like it did here. You don’t get fog like this every morning at Tower Bridge, but if we shoot later in the day, you can pretty much guarantee you won’t. Early starts give you a chance.
You’ll notice one image in the set that looks slightly different from the others. There’s a giant sea creature, don’t worry it’s not real! it was a public art installation along the river at the time of the shoot. It’s not there anymore, which makes the photo a bit of a time capsule. I love that about photographing London. The bridge will always be there. The strange, brilliant, temporary things that pop up around it won’t.
