Why a Private Garden Works So Well in SW7

South Kensington is known for its museums and grand white stucco terraces. Behind many of those houses, though, sit private gardens that most visitors never see. Some are shared by neighbours, while others belong to a single home. Either way, they make a wonderful setting for family photos.

Privacy is the biggest advantage. Children can run freely, and nobody feels watched by passers by. Parents also relax faster, because they are on home ground. In addition, mature trees give soft, even light at almost any time of day. Lawns, benches and old stonework add texture, and there is no travel to plan.

Starting With a Family Hug

We began with everyone together, close and easy. Dad held his son on his hip, and Mum tucked in beside them. After a few frames, he threw his boy up towards the branches. That squeal of laughter set the tone for the rest of the session.

Leaves, Ladybirds and a Toddler on the Move

Toddlers rarely stand still, and I never ask them to. Instead, I give them small things to notice. Here, the fallen leaves did the job for me. Mum caught one and blew it gently towards her son, and he watched it drift away. Then Dad spotted a ladybird in the grass. His son crouched over the open palm, trying so hard to be gentle. Meanwhile, I stayed low and quiet, just out of the way. Small, absorbed moments like this are often the ones parents treasure most.

A Quiet Moment for Mum and Dad

While their son explored, I turned to his parents. Couples often feel shy in front of a camera at first. So I gave them something simple to do, like hold each other and chat. Within minutes, they were laughing at their own private jokes. Of course, their son soon wandered back to check what he was missing. He tugged at Mum’s jeans, and we had the whole family in frame again.

Planning Your Own South Kensington Family Photoshoot

Location. A private garden is ideal if you have access to one. Otherwise, SW7 has plenty of beautiful options. Kensington Gardens sits just to the north, with open lawns and old trees. Nearby, the mews streets around Queen’s Gate suit a relaxed urban walk.

Timing. For toddlers, I usually suggest a morning slot after breakfast. Energy is high, and moods tend to be sunnier. Tree cover also means we can shoot later if naps demand it. In summer, the last two hours before sunset give the warmest light.

What to wear. This family chose matching double denim, and it worked brilliantly. Blue sits beautifully against green leaves and golden autumn grass. If full matching feels too much, pick two or three soft colours instead. Avoid big logos and neon, because they pull the eye away from faces.

Props. A picnic blanket is my favourite prop by far. It gives everyone a place to sit and a game to play. Also, bring a small snack and a favourite toy for any wobbles.

A private garden is hard to beat for calm and privacy. Kensington Gardens is also close by, with lawns and mature trees. For an urban feel, the quiet mews streets work well early in the day.

Rules vary from garden to garden. Some committees like residents to let them know first. It is always worth checking before we book, and I can help with the wording.

That is completely normal, and it rarely spoils anything. I simply follow what your child wants to do. Often, the best images come when a toddler decides to do their own thing.

Yes, I photograph families right across London. Kensington, Chelsea and Knightsbridge are all easy for me to reach.

I’m flexible, we can keep an eye on the weather the day before. It rarely rains all day but it looks like it will we can reschedule.

Absolutely, we don’t need a private garden, we can use one of the many parks in London.
